New text of Recreational craft directive: getting closer to adoption

On 12 June 2013, the negotiations on the new recreational craft directive were concluded and on 18 June 2013, the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee unanimously adopted the revised new text of the EU recreational craft directive. The vote marked the successful conclusion of the negotiations started several months ago among the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission.

The next steps are the vote in European Parliament’s plenary which is scheduled for 9-12 September and the Council’s approval in October 2013. The text will then be published in the EU Official Journal and a period of 24 months will be given to Member States to transpose the directive and modify their national legislations accordingly. After the 24-month transposition period, companies will have a 12-month period during which products built against the old and the new rules will be both accepted on the EU market.

ECB Nederland will adopt the same 12 month transitional period in her assessments. This means new assessments will be carried out against the new Directive. Existing type approvals will be verified during this period for any consequences from this Directive change and issued an amended certificate. This will take place approx. end of 2015, beginning 2016.
